The History of HydraIRC

I (Hydra) am the original author of HydraIRC and I currently maintain and develop the application as an on-going project which I started writing back in June 2002.

I have used lots of IRC clients in the past and none of them fully suited my needs so I set about writing my own client.

I also wanted to learn about Windows GUI and TCP/IP socket programming, so an IRC client also fulfilled those needs.  HydraIRC is my first GUI program that I've written for Windows, previously I had written lots of little console applications.  I've been working on other projects that run under Windows, such as GtkRadiant, but these used 3rd party GUI toolkits, and not the Windows native GUI.  I have also written several large projects on the Amiga and the PC in C, but never much C++. 

HydraIRC is a great learning project for me as I'm using lots of modern tools, SDK's, programming practices and technologies.

That said, I am a pretty competent programmer, so don't think that HydraIRC will just be another app by some kid who needs to do some college coursework! ;)
